Types of Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a non-removable device consisting of one or more artificial teeth in a row that bridge gaps due to missing teeth. After tooth loss, the surrounding teeth can shift, damaging your bite. A bridge restores balance to your bite and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting. There are two types of bridges: traditional and implant-supported.

Traditional Bridges

A traditional bridge is supported by dental crowns attached to natural teeth on either side of the restoration. This option is an effective, affordable, and dependable restoration method for patients who are ineligible for implant-supported bridges.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Unlike traditional bridges which require the modification of healthy teeth, implant-supported bridges are affixed to dental implants. These small titanium posts are surgically embedded into your jaw. They provide unrivaled support for many types of restorations, including crowns and dentures. An implant-supported bridge is attached to the posts using small connectors known as abutments.

Implants are the only tooth replacement method that prevents bone degeneration associated with tooth loss. While they are typically more expensive than traditional restorations, the posts can last a lifetime and are an investment into your long-term oral health.

Treatment Process

During your initial consultation, you can discuss your options with your doctor. He can help you decide what type of restoration is right for your needs and conduct a complete exam of your oral health. He may also take a series of digital x-rays and scans to assess the health of your jaw.

The Procedure

If you choose to receive an implant-supported bridge, you will first need to undergo dental implant surgery and wait three to six months for your jawbone to fully heal. For your convenience, we can perform all phases of treatment in-house.

With a variety of materials and treatment options available in our office, a bridge from Toupin Dental and Associates can be customized to fit your needs.

To place a traditional bridge, your doctor will prepare the adjacent teeth, resizing them to provide space for the crowns. Once your teeth are prepared, we can take detailed impressions of your teeth, using either physical molds or digital scans. Our onsite lab will use the impressions to craft your custom restoration. It typically takes our technicians one to two weeks to fabricate a bridge. During that time, we can fit you with a temporary restoration to protect your teeth.

The final step is placing your new, permanent dental bridge. A traditional bridge is held in place using a strong adhesive. Any necessary adjustments can be made at the time of placement.

Streamlined Service

At Toupin Dental and Associates, you can benefit from our onsite lab. By receiving a bridge fabricated at our lab, you can interact directly with the technicians creating your restoration. They can explain all of your options, and discuss any customization before the bridge is fabricated as well as during the final fitting. We also provide custom shade matching, which helps ensure your bridge blends seamlessly with surrounding teeth.
